Before Jesus was born, the angel Gabriel appeared to Elizabeth and Zechariah, telling them that the Lord would give Elizabeth, a middle-aged, God-loving, barren woman, a son. Her son would prepare a people who were ready for the Lord. Gabriel also appeared to Mary, telling her that she, although a virgin, would conceive and bear a Son, given to her by the Spirit of God and the Author of all life, and He was to be named Jesus. When Mary went to visit Elizabeth, Elizabeth’s baby was filled with the Holy Spirit and she cried out, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the Child you will bear! But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”
