Rainy Season Worsens Crisis

Rainy Season Worsens Crisis

“Deliver me from sinking in the mire; let me be delivered from my enemies and from the deep waters. Let not the flood sweep over me…”

Psalm 69:14-15

Though Myanmar experiences its rainy monsoon season every mid-May to October, the dual crises of the military coup and Myanmar’s third COVID wave have turned this rainy season into a flood of misery. Since the coup on February 1st, over 211,000 people have been displaced by armed conflict across Myanmar. Many of them in Chin and Kayin (Karen) States are hiding from the violence in jungles and caves, a situation made almost unbearable by the rainy season. Families already living in fear of snakes, leeches, and wildlife now have to face heavy downpours with barely any shelter. Now in eastern Myanmar, flooding has displaced hundreds more families and submerged homes in over 500 residential areas along the Thai border.

As COVID cases continue to spike out of control, the rainy season has also made many more susceptible to sickness and complicates COVID response with the advent of the seasonal flu. Myanmar has reported over 130,000 confirmed cases and 3,000 COVID deaths since June, but a severe lack of testing and undercounting makes it likely that the true number is many times higher. In eastern Myanmar, healthcare workers and volunteers have been forced to evacuate flooded hospitals, carrying bedridden COVID patients through roads and alleyways submerged in knee-deep water. Rain-swollen rivers on the Thai-Burmese border, some rising as high as 10 feet above their danger level, threaten to stop delivery of crucial oxygen and medical supplies at the time Myanmar needs them most.

To support a ministry on the Thai border that is distributing tarps to displaced families during this rainy season, as well as investing in oxygen concentrators in the current COVID oxygen crisis, please give below:

Prayer Requests

  1. Pray for the Lord to flood Myanmar with healing and medical supplies as COVID continues to ravage the country.
  2. Pray for God to be a refuge, deliverer, and provider for families displaced by violence and flooding.
