Inside Myanmar’s Worst Prison

Inside Myanmar's Worst Prison

For over 130 years, Myanmar’s Insein Prison in Yangon has been a bastion of brutality and authoritarian rule. Built in the British colonial era to house up to 5,000 prisoners, the notorious prison today holds 9,000 to 12,000 prisoners, including many detained in recent months for opposition to the military coup. Since the coup, many reports of ruthless torture – soldiers beating detainees with glass bottles, whipping them with cable wires, and starting to bury them alive – have emerged from Myanmar’s prisons.

As thousands fall prey to Myanmar’s third wave of COVID, reports have emerged of an outbreak among inmates. On July 23rd, witnesses outside Insein prison reported hearing prisoners stage a protest, chanting anti-military slogans for about an hour, and that military trucks were deployed to the location soon after. Some sources believe that the protests began as a demand for access to healthcare; military junta spokesmen soon reported that there had been a prison riot, but through negotiation the prisoners’ demands would be met.

Less than a week later, the junta reported that it had begun vaccinating prisoners at Insein Prison, claiming over 600 were vaccinated in the first day. Over 4,200 detainees across Myanmar (including 1,600 from Insein) were released in an attempt to control the virus’ spread, though anti-coup political prisoners were noticeably absent among them. Meanwhile, several ministries have been seeking opportunities to share Christ’s love to those detained in Insein; some have successfully delivered food, basic supplies, and over 2,000 Bibles to be distributed among inmates.

Prayer Requests

  1. Pray for the Lord’s merciful protection from COVID and military brutality over those imprisoned at Insein and all of Myanmar’s prisons, and for the vaccinations to successfully contain the COVID outbreak.
  2. Pray for the Word of God and hope of Christ to penetrate into the hearts of prisoners, so that they would be truly free.
