India’s Mizoram State Welcomes Chin Refugees

India's Mizoram State Welcomes Chin Refugees

In the town of Thantlang in Myanmar’s Chin State, artillery fighting erupted between the Myanmar army and the Chin Defense Force in September, resulting in homes set ablaze and a number of civilians and soldiers wounded or dead. Nearly all of Thantlang’s 8,000 residents fled to surrounding areas. Many crossed the border by river boats into India’s Mizoram State.

Although India’s central government has instructed the four states bordering Myanmar to stop and deport people crossing the border, Mizoram State has chosen to welcome and shelter the refugees. Although they have been separated by the Myanmar-India border, the Chin people of Myanmar and the Mizo people of India are both from the Zo ethnic group. They share language, culture, and family ties by both blood and marriage. Many also share the same faith, as a high percentage of the Zo people are Christian.

Myanmar’s Chin refugees are sheltering in relatives’ homes, community halls, school buildings, and temporary shelters set up by civil society groups. Mizoram’s education department is admitting refugee and migrant children from Myanmar into local schools. The Mizo Students’ Federation, nonprofits, cultural organizations, media channels, and Christian groups are collaborating to fundraise cash and in-kind donations for the refugees.

Prayer Requests

1. Praise God that many of Myanmar’s Chin people have hope in Christ and have found refuge in India’s Mizoram State. Praise God for the Christlike love of Mizoram’s believers who are helping their kinsmen and spiritual family from Myanmar.

2. Pray for India’s national government to offer legal protection and humanitarian assistance for Myanmar’s refugees.
