This is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah the son of David, the son of Abraham…Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Messiah.

Jesus, the long awaited Messiah, the One who was there at the conception of time itself, having dwelt infinitely before in perfect communion with the Father and Spirit. He was coming. No one knew the day or hour. There had been prophecies and divinely inspired songs, prophesying a King like no other who would reign forever. All the while, the Lord was preparing the way through the most unlikely — and some might say unworthy — of people, in accordance with His covenants. He used 42 generations, marked by sin, violence, and unbelief. To 42 generations, he was faithful to His word. 42 generations passed, all in desperate need of a Savior. Only God saw the picture in its entirety. Jesus would come to earth, by the humblest of means, live a perfect life marked by intimate communion with the Father, and rescue a world lost in darkness at the cost of His own life. Despite the chaos of humanity, and our rebellious sin nature, God was always in control. He was at work in every heart, preparing the way for the coming of the King. He knew in the end that His Light would come and spread across the globe, and the darkness would not overcome it.
