As one of the costs of the coup, many factories and businesses had to shut down and those that remain are struggling to continue to operate as Myanmar has experienced rolling blackouts since December 2021, becoming even worse since late February with random outages lasting up to six hours or more.
Myanmar families are now facing a free falling societal collapse with no jobs, no savings, no food, and no hope for a better future. The loss of food has led to complete social collapse, women turn to prostitution, men join gangs or become thieves, children turn to thievery or collect plastic bottles for recycling.
One of our ministry partners is distributing 5,000 nutritious bowls of soup daily in twelve different locations in Yangon to those in most desperate need. A father of one slum family said, “Previously, while I had a job, I could feed my family. But now, we have nothing to eat. I can’t watch my children go hungry. Your food distribution has become our life saving source.”
“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink…”
Matthew 25:35 (NIV)
