“He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
He breaks the bow and shatters the spear.”
Psalm 46:9
As international outcry has grown over Myanmar’s coup, many have warned of the growing threat of civil war. What many fail to realize is that Myanmar has already been locked in civil war for over 70 years. Conflict between ethnic groups extends back to warring empires centuries before Burma’s independence from the British in 1948 and continues to this day. The Bamar, Myanmar’s ethnic majority in the nation’s heartland, have long dominated every sphere of life, and over 20 armed ethnic minority groups have fought for their independence against the Burma Army in pockets of conflict around Myanmar’s borderlands for decades.
Prayer Requests
1. Pray for the peace of Jesus to break into the decades, even centuries of violence and hatred between ethnic communities in Myanmar.
2. Pray that God would end Myanmar’s long-running civil war, and transform this long legacy of ethnic division and warfare into a true love and unity only He can give.
